Causes and Effects
Cause: Immigrants from Europe came to America because they wanted to escape religious persecution.
Effect: Many different churches were made for different religions, and cities were divided based on their religion/customs.
Cause: California had the Gold Rush.
Effect: Chinese heard of it and came to America through Angel Island, but when they arrived most of the gold was already gone.
Cause: Many people moved to the cities because they were in need of jobs and money.
Effect: Major cities were over-populated. Sanitation and Water quality was decreasing in quality. The food supply was scarce too due to over population. Transportation, other than by foot, was rare in the slums because it was costly and if it broke down, due to mass transit, it would very costly to fix. Crimes increased because there were so many people and not enough police officers or resources. As a result of the growing population, fires intensified due to the overcrowded tenements because of the candles that were necessary to see. They could not be put out because of the lack of water and the buildings were so close together. Most of the time when a fire started in one tenement it spread and burned down all the surrounding homes.
Cause: Japanese children were segregated in schools in San Francisco.
Effect: Japanese rose in protest to this and led to the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907-1908.
Cause: Various ethnic groups lived in the same city but were segregated.
Effect: Natives were angry that there were so many different ethnics and immigrants they tried to protest their jobs.
